  • How much do you pay for car insurance?

When folks post their expenses, a comment often gets made that their auto insurance figure is too high. I don't think everyone realizes how variable rates are around the country. Rates are based on many factors like where you live, what kind of car, how much you drive, your age, your marital status, your FICO score, your education level, other policies you have with the same company and more. I live in NJ which has the highest auto rates in the country by state average. That said, when I lived in Philadelphia, my rate was double what it is in NJ. Even though as a state, PA is lower than NJ, Philadelphia itself was much higher.

    We have 2 cars, a 98 Camry and a 00 Sienna. Our premium for 10/08-4/09 was $1,098.80, or $183.13/month.

I'm certain that I can find cheaper coverage. I got a quote from another company last year that was a little lower (about $30/month) but I never followed through. It is on my list of things to do this year.

    * Why should I pay for my daughter's education when she already knows everything?

    2006 Ridgeline and 2006 Accord

    $1000 deductable and 500k comprehensive
    $900 for year.

House is on same policy, an yearly rate is lower than 6 month rate.

There you go. You proved my point in one post.

For a full year, you pay less than we pay for 6 months, and you've got 2 much newer, more expensive vehicles than us.

We have an 08 Subaru Outback and a 99 VW Golf and our monthly premium in $104.00 for both. We have a $500 deductible with full coverage on both (400K Comp).

Lately there have been so many scandals, bad publicity about major carriers and anecdotal tales from friends we are more reliant on 'expert' suggestions. We have found it effective to use an insurance broker who puts his client's auto insurance needs out to 'bid' by the major insurers. He gives us his recommmendations about the coverage we need and 3 carriers to chose from. I've looked at quotes on-line and they are usually more expensive but I figure that's because they don't know much about us.

It's important to look at all the items covered on your auto policy. For example policies routinely include auto rental insurance which you may not need.

I'm not sure I'd say you don't need it, but I would look at how much it is costing you. Our rental coverage costs us about $85/year. Two days in a rental would cost that much and if the car is in an accident, we are likely to be without it for a lot more than 2 days. As with most insurance, it is a gamble if we will need it. We have used that benefit a couple of times in the past when one of our cars was damaged and it was nice to not have to pay out of pocket for the rental while we were dealing with other issues related to the accident.

                2002 Ford Taurus
                2007 Honda Odyssey

                $470.31/6 mos

                $1000 deductible

We have rental and towing on our insurance too. Don't need AAA, since this is much lower.

They do vary significantly. It does pay to shop around occassionally to make sure you are getting a good deal. Even a look at progressive dot com can give one an idea if a better deal may be out there.

Yeah, rental insurance is not something we have ever paid for. Some people may need it or like it, but certainly a lot of people don't need it. Renting a car during the week to commute to work can be considerably cheaper than a vacation rental. So even if my spouse and I both worked on the opposite ends of town, I probably wouldn't see the point. We insure for catastrophe. Car rental does not strike me as a catastophic expense. Just some food for thought. (I love my AAA though, which is more a convenience thing; we certainly have our preferences. Obviously AAA is not catastrophic insurance).

                  2001 Ford (Comprehensive & Liability)
                  2005 Dodge (Full coverage)

                  $1k deductibles

                  We pay around $1500/year

For us, it's the region. Perfect driving records (knock on wood), cheapest rates (we shop around every year or two and have never found anything cheaper than our current insurance. We have multi-line and loyalty discounts, which is the kicker).

BUT we moved here when we were about 25 and our auto insurance rates DOUBLED. We just had old clunkers at the time with no comprehensive/collision. Clearly the region. It was cheaper to be under 25 and insured back home, which is crazy. We moved from San Francisco area to Sacramento. I expected driving to be more hazardous back home. I was wrong. I can see clearly why the liability insurance is expensive. CRAZY drivers.

(Housing here is about 60% cheaper, so I'd say it's worth the crazy auto insurance; give and take. THough maybe not worth the threat to life and limb).

Steve, oh my, yeah, you have expensive insurance rates in NJ. You win!

This is nothing. When we lived in Philly, our insurance was twice as much. When our friends here in NJ complain about the rates, we just shake our heads and tell them they don't know how good they have it.

2003 monte carlo, sporty model 2 door
2 g colision deductable (I like it high to save)

It is no fault Michigan insurance.
