  • Friendly Forum Rule Reminder

Here are some simple rules that I want to remind everyone:

    1. You are allowed to disagree with people and debate as forcefully as you want on the topic. You are free to list all the ways you think that someone's reasoning is stupid, but you are not allowed to turn things personal and call other members here stupid no matter how much you may disagree with them. Turning things personal does nothing to further discussion on the topic which is the reason we are all here.

    2. If you think a post is out of bounds or is trolling, use the "report post" button (that red triangle with the black line icon in the upper right hand corner) and I will take a look at it.

    3. If there is someone that you don't want to read their posts, you can place them on your ignore list. Go to your control panel, scroll down and on the left hand side under the "Miscellaneous" heading is a "Buddy / Ignore Lists" - place the person on your ignore list.

    4. As this forum gets bigger, there are going to be a larger number of people seeking help and asking questions. With more people will also come a wider variety of opinions. If you can't comment without making it personal or you think the person is trolling, it's better not to comment at all.

One of the things that I admire about these forums is that even with the debates that take place in them, it always remains civil and it rarely breaks down into name calling. Let's keep it that way

While I agree with this, I think that we should be able to freely discuss the issues and conclude any issue as being stupid, the difference being that we are attacking the issue, not the person.

Maybe add a rate thread/ rate post feature.

1-5 stars for each post, and then use this to

            a) rate thread based on average of each post in thread
            b) rate each post based on the average of each rating of that post

Google groups does this (I have a 4 star rating).

What is trolling anyway? I keep seeing this being mentioned in the posts.

trolling is making a post to get a response, even though the actual post content was mis directed.

Might be a post to make someone feel bad and provoke an emotional response.
Might be a post with several controversial points
Might be a post which criticizes a point of view.

Want to see an example? Start a thread which says "managed mutual funds are better than index funds". State a couple reasons why, then let the responders carry the thread for you.

Trolling: Deliberately provoking arguments on newsgroups or bulletin boards, with no other intent than to gain attention for the sake of attention.

Also another site defines it as: To deliberately post false or controversial messages to gain attention for the sake of attention, usually from people who genuinely want to help.

There is a rate thread feature at the top right of every thread started.

Calling issues stupid is fine. Saying what the person said is stupid is fine. Saying the person is stupid is not fine.

if I have to scroll to find it, then it is not being used enough for that reason. If you make it a per post thing, then each post gets rated after I read it, and the thread rating could be a summary of the ratings of the posts in that thread.

I am on two other forums and I will say this is the best group ever. Once in a while we get a troublemaker, but they usually do not stay too long. Ignore them and they will go away!

I would like to have this option too. Unfortunately, I don't think they don't have that option with is forum software...There is limited things you can do when you have software and it depends I used it and it isn't allowed. It's a pain to scroll all over to rate them and I think that is why more people don't
