While convincing investors to give you money can be a daunting task, finding them is not difficult. This is because they are as much looking for you as you are looking for them. Here are some ideas:

        (i) Startup events: Given that starting up is "hot," many investors are found at startup events. Attend these events. You might pick up a few ideas and meet investors.

(ii) Locate them online: LinkedIn, Angel List, and a dozen other platforms make it pretty easy to locate investors. Several of these also encourage you to create an online profile for your startup.

(iii) Make them find you: Write something insightful, get written about, or simply market your startup well, and you might be pleasantly surprised to see that investors would contact you.

(iv) Simply ask: Ask your friends, other entrepreneurs, or even strangers on platforms, and people might direct you to specific investors.

        (v) Look up online lists: Most startup related media periodically publish lists of top investors. Though I find that the rating criteria is usually suspect, the lists are a good starting point.

(vi) Check out websites: Websites of investor networks usually list their investors. Also, angel networks and VC firms make it easy for you to submit a business plan to them.

There are many methods to reach investors. Make sure you have something compelling to show them, and tell them, when you do reach them. Good luck.

Here are some other good alternatives if you are looking for seed money to get your business started.

          1. Personal savings
          2. Credit cards
          3. Home-equity lines of credit
          4. 401k and retirement accounts

Pretty much you are going to want to show that you have some skin in the game, otherwise your investors won't have confidence that you are committed to your idea.

          5. Family and Friends
          6. Angel investors
          7. Customers
          8. Employees
          9. Liquidation of stocks and bonds
          10. Third party loan guarantee payments
          11. Networking
          12. University or Private Incubator programs
          13. Advances on inheritance
          14. Crowdfunding
          15. Foundations and grants

How can I find investors for my business idea? I have idea but no money!
First off before looking at funding sources you have to figure out a business plan. How much money will you need? How do you plan to build your business? Who will you be marketing to? Lots of other questions to ask yourself and make decisions about that in general don't require one red cent.

Also if your idea is so good, what sacrifices are you willing to make to be able to invest in your business yourself. Is there anyway to 'bookstrap' your busines.

The first thing to ask about a business is not where to get the money, but is this a viable business concept and how will I get it to work?

There are multiple conferences out there where you can get up on stage and pitch investors. I would advise you to stay as far away as possible from conferences where you have to pay to pitch.

Arguably in my mind, some of the best conferences include TechCrunch Disrupt, Money2020 (if you are in the financial services space), Le Web, or any of the conferences organized by Web Summit. Even if you are not selected to pitch on stage you can also benefit from scheduling meetings with the attendees of these conferences.

To make the best out of conferences make sure that you get ahold of the guest list of people attending. Find the investors that would be interested in your venture and start sending them emails to schedule a meeting at least 2 weeks prior to the conference date.
