  • how long to get back income tax amendment?

WE filed a few income tax amendments. They was a credit we failed to file for a few years in a row related to mortgage interest paid my husband discovered. He does our taxes and never noticed or found the credit. We qualified fo rit some of the past few years. There weer even a couple we won't get b/c he never found the credt and it's been over the few years you may go back. WE filed our regular taxes a long time ago electronicly and got back the refunds already direct deposited.
At the same time we mailed in the amendments but have yet to see the funds deposited. I think we mailed in the amendments months ago.

Amended returns have to be processed by hand. Meaning they don't go through a computer system like a regular income tax return. They are assigned, then reviewed, then the refund owed has to be approved by another person, and then a request for a check or direct deposit (not 100% on that...I think you can get amended refunds by DD).

Which credit did you miss? Interest on mortgage that goes on your itemized schedule A? Just wondering. OH...and they have to have all the documents to make the adjustment, if you just sent an amended without telling them what you changed they will send you a letter back which will slow down the process.

You can call the IRS (find the number at the website) and they should be able to tell you were in the process your amends are and how much longer they expect it will take.

It was a tax credit for paying property tax I believe. It was my understanding you got a credit if you make under so much income per year. Some of the years we made under and a couple we made over (fluctuated due to OT and my hours at work and we were close)

My husband does our taxes. I would say him doing it missed the credit, but the first year we were married he paid a preparer and she missed it to or didn't bother since it was such a small amount(it was the first year the credit was out there dh said also), but it the other yeas we have about $200 to $400 or so coming back.

Property tax...yes, on your itemized schedule. Also taxes you paid on your cars. They should also send you interest on that refund.

I asked IRS last night, and he said about 6-8 weeks processing time. And they shouldn't fuss too much about property tax being added and the amounts are huge refunds (not compared to what they see) so I would say it should go through fairly easily (not need a lot of documentation).

But I do know that some service centers process faster than others. We (I work for a tax prep office) used to use on service center and amended returns seem to be fairly timely, then last year they (IRS) said we had to send it to another service center (I think CA), and it was taking FOREVER.

We recently filed an amendment and the first time I mailed it off I apparently forgot a form, even though I asked the irs guy what to send, and they sent it back within 2 weeks. I resent it and within 3 weeks the money was direct deposited into our account. I thought that was pretty quick. they had warned us that it could take up to 12 weeks.

MY dh sent the amendement and supporting documents in on his own. It was simply to show property taxes payed. Places like h and R block wanted a fee to "check the return for erorrs" (we would pay them to "find" what we already found) and a second fee for filing the form. IT would have been around $200 so we did it ourselves.
I wouldn't have expected the irs to pay me interest on an error we made. IT isn't thier fault dh didn't file for the credit. lol
