I've never dealt with bankruptcy personally, but I wouldn't advise doing it yourself for the same reason that it isn't a good idea to represent yourself in court during a criminal or civil trial. You will often by biased toward yourself and simply won't have the expertise to do it by yourself. Unless of course you have a law degree or years of experience in the field.
I dont have any law degree or experience, I have just heard that you are able to do it yourself.
Ive only inquired about bankruptcy once through a professional and it was very expensive. Im afraid the creditors will start to garnish my wages soon which isnt a lot to begin with.

Alisin, I filed for chapter 7 about 4 years ago and it cost $750 and I only had to show up to court once and that was only to testify that the infomation provided was correct. The cost may have risen slightly as there has been some new legislation past regaurding bankruptcy, that makes filing more complicated and puts more risk on the attorney's representing filers. Post bankruptcy isn't as bad as the media would have you believe, I got a secured cc to rebuild my credit 6 months after and have paid it off every month. I got a car loan a year later, and now have a credit score of 690 ... when I filed I was at 530. I have actually found I have no need for credit at all anymore, and the only thing I still have problems with is getting store issued credit cards (to take advantage of them lending me money at 0% interest on items I was already going to purchase outright).
