  • Annual Raise

What is a good annual raise? 3%? Does anyone not really get raises but get bonuses? That's what the company was saying to DH, bigger bonuses and no raise. They don't want to lock in the fixed amount.

And it just seems like our income is going down because of the lack of raises and rising prices of stuff.

I'm a federal employee, and we get raises(step increases) every year. Up until about step 7 or 8, then it's every other year.

It really depends on the company. My company usually gives between 0-7% based on performance. The higher your pay, the higher percentage of your pay becomes objective based. For example, each year you could get a 5% raise, but 15% of your salary is based on certain objectives. If you don't meet them, you lose 15% of your pay. However, your base pay does go up if you get a raise.

cost of living raises track, well. . .um. . .the cost of living (thank you Capt. Obvious). . .generally around 3%.

Meritious raises are based on well. . .um. . .merit (thank you again, Capt., LOL.).

There is a difference between the two. At my office I gave a 3% COL raise every year. . .meritious raises were only given to a maximum $$$ amount for the position (that is, there is only so much money a front desk assistant is going to make).

That being said. . .even when she capped at $12.00/hour, I would still do a COL raise.

        Make any sense?

Anything meritorious after her cap. . that's a bonus.

Small business is different than big business which is different than gov't.

All of DHs jobs have been 'contract' so they don't come with long term promises..like annual raises. That said he gets more raises than the average bloke he works with..each time the contract is renegotiated there is a chance for a raise..or for being let go...So far he has never been let go..

Most of the time when he gets a raise he has to learn a new job to go with it...which he doesn't mind, he likes challenges.

Our co. used to give 8-10% raises (that's what I was told), but after 9/11 it went down to 3%. Even after it got better, raises stayed the same. So, if you're not promoted, you're pretty much dragging . I moved up twice, but now I'm not sure when I'll be lucky. In this dept. they don't really appreciate your work (I mean they don't even mention what a great job you did or something, just that they co. had a great profit, that's nice). Oh, and no annual reviews here either.

I used to get good raises at my old position, my new one has been 1 raise in 3 years.

My old position was giving 3-5% raises, and two different times I got 2 raises in less than 12 months- they really treated their key employees well (I know several people which did not get raises in either period).

No raises. No bonuses. Welcome to the medical field where costs have been rising and reimbursements have been dropping for years. I'm lucky my pay hasn't gone down.

DH just got a ridiculous amount, less than 2%. It is not because he isn't a good employee. The company will just not allow anything higher. Doesn't really keep up with the cost of living, but hey he still has a job!

My dh is self employed, no raises, no bonus and no paid holidays or vacations. He works 60 hours a week, no over time pay either.

He may not be charging enough for his time then Ima. I know many people who have their own business (I do bookkeeping for a couple small companies). This is also in the construction field (architects actually). They raise their rates about every year or so. Your husband does good work (I assume) and shouldn't be afraid to do COL raises for himself.

My DH works for Uncle Sam as an Professor at the Naval War College and received a 3.8% raise this year and will get a step increase in April. We are pleased with it because most of the civilian sector isn't getting what he did.

The last two people that we built for, said that my dh did not charge enough per hour! Since he can do it all (plumbing, electrical, build in place custom cabinets, paint, trim, hardwood flooring, tile laying etc.), he saves them a ton of money!! ( I am not bragging, but I have a ton of testimonial letters from customers saying that he is the best builder in the state of Georgia) (Maybe, that is bragging?? But I am proud of his workmanship and perfectionist ways.)

What is stopping him from charging appropriately for his time? You need to let him know that profit is not evil (I really think that is how some people feel - it's like they feel guilty or something).

I get 5% merit increase each year working for Public sector (State of California) after leaving banking industry. My wife got 23% pay raises in the last 24 months because of her excellent review in Pediatric Burn Care. We live in Northern California and the pay for Nurses are the highest in the nation because of shortages of nurses. Hospitals have to offer higher salary, raises, or bonuses to remain competitive in job pools to keep their nurses around.
