Maybe in some areas of the country, but in the northeast, Wegmans is still going very strong.

We do pick up more grocery items at Walmart and Target than we used to but we definitely don't do our regular grocery shopping there. It isn't convenient to home and they still don't have the selection that the supermarket has. It's more of being at Target and remembering that we're out of a certain item and grabbing it while we're there.

I shop at Wegman's every week and don't see that changing. Great selection. Lowest prices around. Very nice store with helpful staff.

I think the grocery stores around here have all decided to stay alive by moving into the gift card business. The two biggest chains both offer loyalty programs where you earn money off gas by shopping in their stores, and they sell gift cards. So, now, almost anytime I have a major purchase to make, I find myself buying gift cards at a grocery store. I think I'm spending more money at grocery stores since the intro of the gift cards and loyalty programs than ever before.

I am not a big fan of Wal-Mart because although some of their prices are lower, not all, and it seems they run other businesses out of town. We lost two nice grocery chains in the past decade when they built their superstore and as a result, our grocery shopping choices are limited. Because of that, our food choices are often limited as well. So, I would say this article is probably right on the money.
