Tough economy? Apple wouldn’t know it. Around half of all U.S. households own at least one Apple product, whether it’s an iPad, iPod or Mac, according to a CNBC survey. It’s estimated that some 55 million homes have at least one Apple gadget, and one in 10 of the non-Apple households plans to purchase a fruit-branded product in the next year...

I wonder if it is really 50% penetration or if that is an average, like one home owns 5 devices and 9 homes own zero so the average is 5 out of 10.

We own and currently use 5. We also own but no longer use at least 5 more. That would skew the averages depending on how they are counting.

There are currently 0 in my house. I don't have anything against their products. It just happens to be that I don't own anything that is made by Apple.

The main thing I thought was that it's odd that so much of the country has luxury items (and I think we'd all agree that Apple products are luxuries that are nice to have) - but people say the economy hasn't turned. Either the economy's doing better than people say it is, or people still suffer from a substantial lack of financial knowledge (aka when times get tough, cut expenses starting with luxuries)... Or both.

I know the article says they did a survey to find out what percent of households own Apple products. I personally know several people who do. Many many people at work have an iPhone at least.

I can assure you well more than 1/2 the people I know have Apple products (iPhones/iPads coming to mind - the more expensive products), no matter what the economic situation. & I can assure you none of them actually paid cash for these toys (unless they were of a higher income, which is few people these days, around here). Most of them can't even pay their basic living expensives.

Keep in mind that you can now get an iPhone free with a 2-year contract. I've always gone for the free phone for as long as I've had a cell phone. The iPhone was the first one I ever paid for but today, even those can be had for free so the spread of them is even less of a surprise.

Love our iMac. Really miss our iPhones with how easy they were to backup and sync - don't have that with Android devices.

I believe the free one is an older version. If you want the latest and greatest, then you still have to pay.
