  • What brokerage firm do you use?

I'm looking to dabble in some stock and am looking at capital one for $6.95 a trade, anything cheaper?

If you do automatic investing plan (on Tuesdays) with capital one then it is $3.95 per trade.

But you have to set it up by Monday at 5pm and you can't really time the purchase on a trading day.

But that is a cheaper example.

If you are buying index funds then having an account at fidelity or vanguard means you can buy some of those index funds with $0 transaction fee. For instance in fidelity I buy ITOT with no transaction fees

I use Scottrade. I think they charge $7 but they sometimes have a promo for new accounts to get a certain number of free trades. I would look around for one of those deals.

Robinhood. $0.00 per trade... hard to beat.

Spiffster - do you have access to the entire market on Robinhood, or just a few stocks?

Just about anything you would want to use a retail trading account for. There are some limitations:

            Perfect for dabbling IMO.

I dont get the apparent $7 standard charge for a trade... huge, HUGE ripoff IMO. especially considering they get you coming and going, so as soon as you buy youre in for 14 dollars just for a computer to move a few ones and zeros. No wonder Scottrade can afford to fly some jackass (CEO) around in a helicopter everywhere... :-/

I'm with Vanguard, trades for me are $2.

You have to be Voyager Select and have 500k invested in Vanguard funds to get the $2 trade cost for stocks.

Same for me. Not sure if it is the most economical, but I trade so infrequently and the interface works for me, so.... there it sits. However it will be merging with TD Ameritrade at the end of September, so who knows just what's going to happen then.

True. I forgot about that. Time will tell if it makes any significant difference.

I signed up with robinhood myself. Meryl edge gives you like 30 free trades a month if you have X amount of money in the account.

I use Vanguard as well. I already have my Roth IRA & taxable MF's there, so it was a simple step using them as my brokerage as well. Besides, trades are $7 right now, which is fine for me. I only do stock trades VERY infrequently (perhaps 3 or 4 trades in the last 2 years), so I don't worry about it. I'll eventually qualify for $2/trade, but not going to worry about it between now and then.

Now down to 2 firms. Interactive Brokers and Ameritrade. I recently got rid of Fidelity after how the firm rips you off on foreign exchange transactions.

You can use a discount brokerage firm like fidelity or schwab or go directly to a mutual fund company like vanguard. Keeping fees low is the key to success. Just a 1% fee over a 30-40 year period will cut your account in half!
