What does your portfolio look like currently? I think it is important to build a solid traditional investment portfolio before you start doing anything speculative and "alternative". I'm not necessarily opposed to the alternative stuff. I just don't think it should be the basis of your investing. It's okay to "play" with 3-5% of your portfolio as long as the rest is solid. Of course, you should also be debt-free except for your mortgage before you go messing with that kind of stuff.Steve

I see someone has been watching a lot of Storage Wars on TV. I guess that could be considered investing but not so much in the traditional sense. If you're referring to buying those unclaimed shipping containers or storage lockers at those bidding auctions those have been gaining a lot of popularity and the competition must pretty heavy and it would seem to be a dicey way to try to make money at it but more power to ya if you can succeed at it.

Re: alternate investments
If you are looking for alternative investment then you can invest in real estate and gold. But before investing in it you must have knowledge regarding various facts related with it.Because their price keeps on fluctuating so you must know knowledge about various market trends.

Check this out http://www.prosper.com/ It involves peer-to-peer lending. I haven't taken the leap yet because I am admittedly too scared but it sure fits an "alternative" to standard investments.

Investing in shipping containers is something I have been looking into for a while now as an alternate investment. I have read a number of articles and posts from people stating the positive side to it. It seems that you can get a relatively high yield on your investment is you choose the right company to invest through. You purchase the containers through a asset management company and they rent out the containers and you get a percentage of the monthly income on the rental. There seem to be a number of ways to invest depending on how long you plan to invest for so that you have the option of selling back your containers after 2 years or so. Looks very interesting to me.

Thanks for your answers.
I've been reading on the internet as you recommended about shipping container investments , and I think that although there are many and contradictory information in the internet, some shipping containers leasing companies offer 12 % annual returns and guaranteed results, that makes this investment really attractive.

Originally posted by Joe49I've also been doing some research about shipping investments, and from what I gathered, it seems like a low risk investment, with moderately high revenue. Some companies even guaranty 12% in return. For me the biggest advantage is that I don't need to put in an enormous amount of money to see how this investment is paying off.
If a company can guarantee you 12%, why don't they simply invest their own money? A solvent company can borrow from a bank at a rate far less than 12%. They could make an awful lot of money doing that, much more than they will earn by guaranteeing investors 12%.
Also, low risk and high revenue are mismatched. Risk and reward go hand in hand. If the potential gain is high, then the risk is also high. Anyone who tells you differently is selling something.
It really seems that these posts from new forum members are a poorly disguised attempt to generate interest in shipping container investments.
