online credit card order-- no security code asked

I just made an online order with a reputable company I've used twice before. They did not ask for my credit card security code.

Should I be concerned? The ordering pages appear to be secure.

P.S. Why does this site blot out the initials "Cee Vee Vee" Am I more innocent about curse words than I am aware?

I've shopped at some sites that don't ask for the 3 digit code. Of course off the top of my head I can't name them for you but I know I have.

I always make sure when I go to a site, https:/ is up in the url, if it is, I'm fairly sure I'm on a safe and legit site. Say fairly because with the increasing sophistication of these hackers who knows anymore.

I am doing some work for a company that takes orders for parts they use to ask but a new program they are using now does not require it anymore not sure why just overheard a tech support person telling customers the new encrypted program no longer requires them to ask for it.

The risk of not asking for the security code is on the web site, not you. By not asking for it, they're taking a greater risk that someone is going to make a purchase with a stolen card on their site. Like so many measures that sites take to protect themselves from the fraudsters, it's a choice between protecting themselves and making the customer experience a little smoother.

Interestingly, web sites are never allowed to store that piece of information, not even if they encrypt it. So, if a site collects your credit card number and cvn and gives you the option to save your payment information, it's only going to save your credit card number. If the site wants to run future transactions with your card, it will either have to run them without your cvn or ask you for it again.
