  • New Year's Resolutions?

I'm not one to make resolutions lightly, and the few times I've made them, I've kept them.

Based on my recent experience with the hvac, my resolution is:

    1. If something costs more than $500, there will be a 10-day waiting period to research that seller, do I really need it, best price, etc.
    2. If something costs more than $4999, there will be a 30-day waiting period, same as above and at least one other estimate.

Obvious exceptions for health or safety issues. I'm reminded of the scene from Addams Family where (Sully?) wants to discuss business with Gomez and is told that "that's new business and new business can only be discussed at the beginning of the quarter." End of discussion.

That's how I'll present my waiting period. Yes, I'll probably sound as crazy as Gomez Addams, but that's ok.

    What's your resolution this year?

    New Years Resolution

    Hey frugal saver,

My biggest new years resolution is to develop a secondary source of income. I will strive to achieve an extra $3000 per month by years end.

Something that costs more than $4,999 is probably something that needs replacement asap, like the heater or air conditioner, or a car that dies, or a leaking roof. No way would I go through 30+ days of winter with no heat.

      Definitely get multiple quotes, though.

      * Despite the high cost of living, it remains very popular.
      * Why should I pay for my daughter's education when she already knows everything?
      * There are no shortcuts to anywhere worth going.

Create a mantra and remind yourself of it each and every morning. Life goals cannot be achieved with one paycheck, with one workout, or with one anything. Long term, consistent work gets long term consistent results regardless of a good day or a bad day. Stay positive no matter what a day, week, month, or year brings. Rome was not built in a day.
This applies to attitude, health, wealth, and most importantly, happiness, and mental quality of life.

Limit restaurant spending to $100 per month with the exception of lunch/dinner meetings for business. (I dine out more than necessary)

Don't buy OR sell any large items. This one I struggle with quite a bit. I have a higher % of my net worth in a collector Lamborghini than I should and I struggle with keeping or selling it often. The "responsible" side of me says to sell it and put that money into the S&P 500 but at the end of the day I love the car and it has gone up in value since I've acquired it and should continue to do so. I own it outright and its worth about $150k.

Maintain working out at least 3x per week

Schedule a full physical with blood work. (I'm 30 but want to try and start creating good habits now with routine doctor visits.)

Make myself indispensable at work -- then relax for years to come.

Lose 17 pounds; it is getting critical!
