  • Buying & selling cars on eBay

Curious if anyone has experience buying & selling cars on eBay? I think I recall TexasHusker selling cars on eBay before in another thread. Could you provide some pointers. What are the advantages or disadvantages.

I have a 2007 Dodge Dakota and may sell it but I live in an apartment and don't have extra space to park it. My easiest method is to drive it to a used car dealership and unload it quickly but I realize that I won't get any where near selling it on my own. Craigslist is an option but never gave eBay much thought about selling it. My thoughts were that no one would buy a used car from eBay.

13 years ago we sold a car on ebay. We got a much higher price than what a dealership was willing to pay as a trade-in.

I've never done it personally but I can assure you that this definitely isn't true. Ebay Motors is a huge and well-established marketplace for buying and selling cars and has been for years.

I've never done it, but I have used Autotrader.

It's more professional and legitimate in my opinion. My experience is that the more serious buyers gravitate there. You have to pay to list, but it is a one time fee, and your listing will remain until you sell.

Sold my wife's saturn back in 2004 on ebay. Took lots of pictures and was honest in the listing. I set a reserve price and if I recall it sold for about $1200 more than the reserve. A guy drove from 3 states away to pick it up. We went to the local notary and he was on his way.

              Generally speaking...

eBay car listings are essentially classified ads. Most cars do not sell on eBay because the reserve is set near retail.

eBay is an effective advertising tool for exotic and collector cars, as well as high-end cars.

The car transactions that do occur through the auction process are comparable to the wholesale prices at dealer auctions Manheim, etc.

eBay is a great place to buy a car if the auction is without reserve, because the transaction price will usually be way less than retail. It is poor place to sell for the same reason.

I've bought and sold many cars on eBay. One thing that really helps fetch a much higher price is to offer free shipping.
