  • Already Selling Halloween Candy

I walked into the grocery store today to see this:

So how many of you end up buying Halloween candy well before Halloween and snacking on it yourself long before giving it away to kids? The only reason it would be out this early is because it sells and my guess is that those buying it now aren't buying early to hand it out on Halloween.

Halloween candy in August? So sad! That being said, if the prices are cheaper than the usual non-Halloween prices then I'm in but just to address my own sugar fix.

Poor kids - "Here's some 2 month old candy for you! Eat it and let me know if you think it's a trick or a treat."

I haven't seen a full Christmas display yet, but I have spotted random Christmas stuff starting to appear. It's ridiculous.

I have a terrible sweet tooth at times, so I generally walk right by & totally ignore displays for candy. If I do get some for any reason, especially right now, there's no way the candy would make it until Halloween.

I saw Halloween cand out at several places over the past week. I will NOT buy this early. When I do buy, I get something I do NOT like cause my hips sure won;'t like it.

Actually, since I have been going to DD1 for Halloween since 2005 or 2006 and am NOT home I stopped buying althogether about 2010.

Wait. You should start seeing Channukah stuff by mid Oct. It is VERY early this year - starts Thanksgiving day.

              am i seeing right, 2/$10????

inflation must be running rampant, i wouldn't doubt it if those packages shrank too

i always go dark but this year really validates it

I walked by the Hallmark store in the local mall and they have a Christmas tree up in the window. It's crazy. The kids aren't even done with summer vacation yet.

If anyone happens to have a Garden Ridge close to them you will notice that they already have Christmas trees set up.

I'm surprised I haven't seen any Christmas stuff yet myself. It seems every year it starts sooner and sooner!

Hallmark has put out their ornament collection in June or July for years. That's not really anything new.

As for candy, Valentines stuff comes out the day after Christmas. Easter stuff is out the day after Valentines. Summer stuff (red, white, and blue wrappers) comes out after that. Halloween is out now and the day after Halloween, the Christmas stuff will be out. That's the cycle. The best part is that one day after whichever holiday, the candy all gets marked down 50% or more as if it isn't any good anymore just because the wrapper is orange instead of red or dark colored instead of pastel colored. It's great for the bargain hunter or just cares about what is inside the wrapper.

Our strategy is to buy full sized candy bars when they go on sale. (Costco usually has a sale in sept). The full sized candy bars are not as tempting (for me, anyway ) to snack on. That reminds me, I should be on the lookout for the sales coupon on the next coupon book Costco sends out. Any leftovers make a great start to a care package to family members in college.

Jeffrey - Sorry to tell you that today I bought at Costco:

                          1. Halloween goodies. My custom is to hand out Rice Krispie Treats and Costco was running a $3 off coupon so I bought my 2 boxes to stash in the pantry. Best by date is Feb '14 so no problem there.

                          2. Wired Christmas ribbon. Costco has the best price/quality hands down, on certain styles, even compared to post-Christmas clearance sales. I have learned that certain types of Costco ribbon go fast so grab then while you can. I think decorators and other professionals snatch them up.

Our local Lowes store had snowblowers out a month ago. Sure, some snow might fall around Halloween, but do they really need to remind us in late July?
