  • Anyone travel by Greyhound?

I'm contemplating a trip in June from Los Angeles to Las Vegas by Greyhound. Their website seems to be not functioning properly and displays, "error processing request." I've been trying every so often for a week or so and same thing. Anyone else having trouble? Years ago I rode them and the price was around $40 roundtrip. I was curious if it's still the same, less, or more now. Their website boasts free wifi and power outlets at each seat, these amenities were not available when I last rode with them years ago.

I haven't checked into Greyhound lately, but a friend told me Megabus has pretty reasonable fares. And the site is working.

Ditto this! Megabus has limited routes and stops but their prices are unbeatable!

I see. And yes the Greyhound website now works for me. Megabus has some great fares including $1 fares which is a steal if you can nab it but even their regular fares are reasonable but it drops off at the South Strip transit terminal (SSTT) in Las Vegas. Greyhound on the other hand drops off at downtown next to the Plaza hotel which I'm planning to stay at which is about a 2 minute walk away. By the way for the dates I'm contemplating in June the roundtrip on Greyhound is $20. The clientele on Greyhound may not be upscale but for that price I just might book it.

It`s been 5-1/2 years since I last travelled by Greyhound but it was fine. Certainly nothing luxurious, and I wouldn`t want to take a long / overnight trip by bus, but for a short trip like the one you are contemplating it`s a perfectly OK way to travel. The only suggestion I have is do whatever you have to to minimize the number of trips to the restroom.

Here is an update. I tried making my reservation on Greyhound for my specific dates in June and no can do. There was an $18 roundtrip fare but when I tried to book it I'm getting an error message. I called their customer service and they said that the "advanced 7 day fare" is sold out. I then tried their web fare of $40 and still no can. I checked back later and now the advanced fare is $26 but still no can even though it says 5 fares remaining at that price. I also tried their new web fare and still no can do. Oh well I'm not sure what is going on with them but this is getting frustrating. Maybe it's just not meant to be.

Free wifi and power outlets? That is a cool upgrade from when I used to use Greyhound.

This is one reason I love savingadvice.com . I've never heard of Megabus before, but will now be checking it out.

Bummer about your frustrations booking but I had no idea Grayhound fares were so reasonable in some places. I live 3 hours from Chicago and a roundtrip fare is typically over $200!

I can't ride on a bus. I get motion sick.

megabus only if you must. I highly recommend that you look to just fly for a few bucks more and the time and money you save by not stopping at the Mad Greek makes it all the worthwhile IMHO. sometimes you have to spend a few bucks more for your sanity and sanitation lol.

I hear you but the airfare for flights during the days I'm planning is about $180 roundtrip. And that's the low cost carriers such as Southwest, JetBlue and Spirit. Spirit's fare of about $55 eachway is enticing but with their nickel and dimes surcharges, a carry-on bag is an additional $35 each way so I would rather pay Southwest's fare of $180 which allows me to make changes (if needed) at no extra cost. At any rate I was able to get a descent fare of $26 on Greyhound for the roundtrip. I would much rather fly one hour each way as opposed to riding a bus for 5 hours each way but a guy has to do what a guy has to do. Greyhound makes a pit stop halfway in Barstow, CA. They have some eateries such as McDonald's, Popeyes' Chicken, and some other small venues (I don't think that they stop at the Mad Greek where they sell gyro's). And obtaining a ticket on Greyhound was an adventure in itself. On their website I tried 2 different credit cards, I tried will call, and I tried paying in cash to no avail. I live 25 miles from my nearest Greyhound stations so driving to the station to obtain tickets was a little discouraging at first but I later decided to do so and I eventually decided to do so and get the tickets for $26 roundtrip. Greyhound also offered tickets over the phone but an additional $10 is added to the fare and after three attempts at speaking with operators who apparently were Indian operators located over seas and just about impossible to get my information correct (don't get me wrong I like these people) but the language/communication problem discouraged me from going this route. Operator: Did you say you spell your name with an A. Me: no it's an E. Operator: Did you say this. Me: No I said that, etc, etc. Anyway to make a long story short I'm booked and I hope I don't run into any other shenanegans.

Ah Greyhound! My dad used to be a driver so many years ago, we could get bus passes which we used to go from California to PA to visit relatives every couple summers. My dad had basically deserted us but usually came through with the passes for us. By the time I was done with college (and all the bus miles that entailed) I estimate that I have ridden over 60,000 miles by Greyhound! For sure they didn't have WiFi or any other luxury as personal computers weren't even invented when I took my last bus trip. The questions just brought back memories. One of the trips I made I was only 14, went from CA to PA and back 5 weeks later all on my own! I can't imagine putting a 14 year old girl on a bus for 3 days like that at this point of time, especially because my mother's philosophy was call if there is a problem not call when you get there or whatever!
