This past weekend we met our landlord and some of his friends at the local vineyard/winery and a friend of his mentioned that he had just recently purchased some cattle and paid cash. He's 60 and he said this is the first time in in his life that he hasn't owed money to someone... He's a rancher with over 500 acres of land, lots of cattle, horses, 6 vehicles (between him, his wife and work trucks), a nice house and lots of equipment and supplies. He said it has been one of the best feelings he's ever had to not owe anyone anything and to have everything paid for after being in some form of debt for the last 40 plus years. It was nice to hear the relief in his voice as it adds to the encouragement for us to continue our own goal.
I wanted to tell him that we were working to be debt free within the next two years (we're 36/35) but our landlord was sitting there... We were planning on asking our landlord to lower our rent by $100/month and didn't think he'd be as interested in lowering it if he knew we were paying an extra $1,200/month on our own rental property plus an extra $500/month on our car... it's not like we can't afford what we're already paying.
Shortly after this, our landlord voluntarily asked us if we would be willing to pay $100 LESS each month in exchange for turning on the sprinkler system for the lawn during the summer! It will increase our water bill by about $25/month... we know this because we did it last summer and still paid our normal rent. So for 5 months of watering we've gotten our rent lowered for the next year!
