  • Hotel Room Cleaning Tip

Just curious on everyone's practices -- do you leave a tip each day for the hotel maids that clean the rooms and if you do, how much do you leave?

Honestly it depends on the hotel. Generally I don't tip. However, I have tipped about $2 a day at high end hotels and DisneyWorld.

Great question, I've been wondering. I've noticed that lately some of the mid-level chains I stay in leave tip envelopes.

As one who gets to spend 2-3 nights a week in hotel rooms, I usually leave 2 bucks each day. I figure those folks wouldn't be there doing that work if they didn't need the money, and think about what an impact it could have on their earnings if each guest left $2 and if the employee did 10 rooms daily, times 5 days a week. I've never encountered tip envelopes though, if I did I might not tip.

This is often a hotly debated topic on the Disboards, as Steve can likely attest to.

If I'm staying multiple nights, I make sure to tip the days before my checkout. Just helps make sure my room gets their attention.

I also do the same! Just thinking cleaning rooms aren't an easy task! It's good to somehow help them in a little way!

Minimum of $2.00 per day (always each day because staff changes, and I don't want to short anyone).

In the rare instance of the maid writing "thank you for the tip" on the paper next to the phone, I double the tip.

Years ago (I'm 47), there was always a tip envelope in hotel rooms, usually tucked against the frame of the mirror over the dresser. And my parents always left a tip. In my adult years as a traveler, I've almost never seen a tip envelope. It just seems to be a practice that fell out of favor. I'm not sure how I would leave a tip. You can't just leave cash on the dresser because housekeeping shouldn't be touching that. I guess you could leave a little note but then you are depending on the person speaking/reading English which is not such a great assumption in many places.

For those that do tip, how exactly do you leave that tip? Do you bring your own envelopes, leave a note or just hand it to the person when you encounter them in the hall?

And yes, this is always an issue of debate on the Disney board.

We tip $5.00 per night. We write a short note using the hotel notepad and leave it where it where the soaps/shampoos (or coffee making supplies) are stocked.
We have found that the staff at many hotel chains we've stayed will not accept a tip without a note.

Nor should they. If the staff takes unmarked cash off the dresser or counter, that would be a problem.

I do leave a daily tip always on the pillow of the bed without a note -- I was taught that this is where to leave it as it is obviously left for the maids (unlike money left on a dresser) since that is not where money is usually kept and making the bed is one of their main jobs. Never been an issue and the maids always take it while leaving any money on the dresser alone.

Leave it on the nightstand or dresser with no other personal possessions around it, so that it's obvious that it's a tip. It's never been left standing when I return.

Even in my own home, I would never leave cash lying around, let alone in a hotel room, so to me, a couple of bucks in a hotel room is an obvious tip. Now, several bills on the floor in a coat closet or even on a hotel floor would appear to me that it fell out of someone's pocket; however just lying on a nightstand (or desk or next to the TV) is the only way I've ever seen anyone tip.

I never used to tip the cleaning crew, but have now started to in the last couple years. $2 a night, left on the pillow, without a note.

In my previous job, I traveled every week Mon-Thurs. Based on that, I didn't tip everyday because it wasn't reimbursed. However, I did try to leave a couple of bucks on the last day with a "Thank You" note. When I'm traveling for leisure, I try to leave a couple of bucks per day.

Previously, I've read you should leave the tip on the bed because there can be others that come through the room before the bed-makers.
