If you have a TV from the past few years, hook up your computer to your television. You can use hulu.com or other streaming video.
....unless you live overseas (something about streaming copyrights).... ::sad-panda:: I'm looking around for an alternative, because I refuse to pay $75/mo for a satellite dish that would only get 5-10 hours of use each week (if that).
You can get some things in low HD online. Its better than the standard cable my university gives us. We set everything up with an HDMI cable so the pass from computer to tv has high fidelity. Plus we pay for netflix and get many tv shows on Blueray.
I pay $8.99 for netflix every month, and get unlimited streaming to my TV through my Wii. I haven't had cable for a few months, and I don't miss the bill.
Satellite and cable has gotten so ridiculous in price. I'm paying $58.99 a month for direcTVs "cheapest package". Another $10 a month for HD service. $6 or $7 for DVR. And another $300 for the NFL Sunday Ticket. I called and complained about the price of the Ticket and told them that money was tight and they gave me a $20 statement credit for 6 months and Free HD for a year. Still outrageous though.

I agree. I unfortunately have Comcast. Every six months my promotional rate ends, and I'm back on the phone with them fighting to keep my bill under $50. And this is only for 1 digital box and less than 100 channels. Err... if only I wasn't addicted to TV

don't folk with addictions get advice to quit cold turkey?
we use Hulu, and rarely at that.
Also IMO folk should pay better attention to how much they spend on education, and what they get out of it.
My advice for "tv addicts" is to make a list of alll the shows you watch/DVR. Then go on hulu.com, netflix instant, and the individual station websites, and if you find the program available online, cross it off the list. Now look at what is leftover, and ask yourself is this worth my cable bill? The answer might surprise you.

I've considered this, but I enjoy the tv watching "experience" that hulu cannot compete with. Hulu is just not the same. As sad as it may sound, certain non-necessities like TV, soda/juice, and even living without a roommate are part of my overall happiness. I have managed to cut down on the cost of these things by keeping my cable bill under $50, introducing water into my life (I never used to drink it), and living farther away from work/downtown and taking the bus to school.
