  • Anyone else selling their truck or SUV to save on gas?

I absolutely love my truck and eventhough it's only a year old, I have decided to sell it. I bought a Honda Fit the other day, so my MPG will go from 19 hwy to 35. Hate to sell my truck, but I refuse to line the pockets of the oil copanies any more then neccessary. I guess this is my way of stickin' it to the man.

I have debated it. I love my suv. I have jeep grand cherokee. I get about 18 miles to the gallon. however, with four kids every weekend, it is not an option to buy a small car, no matter what I have it has to fit four kids and a husband. and the jeep is really too small, they don't all fit in the seatbelts properly. My husband drives a truck due to work but we are discussing buying a small truck, like a pup truck. this would save a lot as we would share it. He would use his truck only on the days he has to take the trailer and then I would use it. I really don't want to get rid of my jeep. I really do love it.

I have an Exployer sport trac that gets about 19 per gallon. If I didn't need it for my work, I would sell it and buy a small economy car. It's a very useful truck for my home and work.

What I would like to do is move back into the city, to save gas.

I understand the idea but, in another way of looking at it, now is terrible time to sell a truck or SUV. There are very few people in the market for them right now.

Even so, if you don't mind it taking a while to sell, or if you're willing to set the price low enough, it may well prove worthwhile.

While you are right about certain cars not being very popular; there are those who are looking for another car that is runnable in the family. My brother sold his car to a person who wanted a second car because he wanted another car just in case his one car gave out on him. His job carries with it a must have car because of all the miles that he has to drive, so he loved my brothers car.

We just switched from an 05 Jeep Grand Cherokee to a 06 Honda Accord and the difference in gas milage was night and day. The Honda dealer we purchased it from said they cant sell large trucks and suvs right now. They are low balling people who want to trade them in because they have way too many. Id say get out of it while you can if someone will pay you a decent price.

You're right about now being a bad time, but now is better than it will be when gas is over $5.00 per gallon which is inevitable. I do miss my truck already, but at this time in my life I must be frugal. I start a new job next week, but at half the pay of my previous job. Every penny counts right now. Actually, I guess pennies have always counted. I just didn't count 'em, but now I am. It was cool driving home from Moms tonight. I looked down at the fuel gauge which read 1/2 full. I made the comment to my Wife that if we were in the truck right now, we would have to pull off the highway to fill up. It was nice to know that i didn't have to fill up and still have 1/2 tank left.

The changes that our country is making in the driving habits and driving more gas economical cars could be one reason why the gas could come down in price. It is the demand side of it that pushes it up.

I might just be pessimistic, but I disagree. A few years ago, when gas was $2.50 a gallon and DH and I were attempting to park our little Honda among the sea of land barges at the local mall, I asked DH, "Do you think if everyone drove little 30+mpg cars like us, gas would cost so much? We concurred that it probably would.

I think it would have worked something like this: A few years ago in my home town, the water district implored customers to help conserve water and use it wisely. The residents complied and cut usage. The result was that the water district was not selling as much water, not bringing in much profit, and was not making enough revenue to maintain infrastructure, so they cranked the rates way up to compensate. I could be wrong, but I think gas would have been the same story, maybe not to the degree that we see today, but it would have climbed much higher nonetheless.

There was an article online the other day about trading in big vehicles for little ones. They pointed out that you need to take into consideration additional costs of changing to a different vehicle- such as if you trade in a $6000 truck for a $28,000 car, you've got a $22,000 difference to make up before you start seeing your savings- not including any change to your insurance or registration costs. That's a lot of gas you've got to save to make it actually worth while.

DH and I are actually thinking of looking for a cheap beater truck to have on our farm. We have to much home-improvement type jobs to do around our home that it would really help to have a vehicle that can pull trailers and have room to haul things. Right now we have 2 station wagons, so they aren't much help in the towing department (both 4-cyl). This would be a truck just to have on the farm, not to drive to work every day.

We were thinking we might be able to pick up something cheap from somebody looking to dodge high gas prices!

Gas is over $1.33/litre here, and is only going in one direction (I'll let you guess which direction that is). I actually sold my car (which was an '03 Toyota Corolla) and am bicycling to work and college. My DH still has a car, so I have one available to me if I really need to use it. They are saying within a couple years the price will be over $2/litre. Just look at Europe - gas is outrageously expensive there, and everybody drives around in little 3 cylinder vehicles. No, I don't think the price of gas will go down because everybody starts driving more efficient vehicles. I do think that the opposite is true - the higher gas goes, the more people start driving efficient vehicles.

I'm sure no one here would do this, but I saw a CNN report about the rise in "Car Thefts" and they paralleled it to the rise in arson. As people can't afford to pay for the gas in their huge vehicles, the vehicles get "stolen," and the owners get reimbursed from insurance.

I would have never thought of someone doing that, but when times get tough...

I would think that some of the thefts are due to older cars parts. When the economy gets tight, more vehicles are stolen where I live. They're also taken to other ountries.

I keep thinking I'll go in and lowball a dealer on a SUV.
