  • Ad-free challenge?

I have really noticed a difference in my spending since I stopped reading the ads from the Sunday paper. Anyone care to take up a challenge? Let's ignore all optional advertising for a week. Obviously, we cannot avoid everything (i.e. billboards, Internet ads), but we can ignore television commercials, newspaper and magazine ads, radio ads, and catalogs. Let's see if it makes a difference to us in our pocketbooks.

I attribute some of my non consumerism, to my incessant channel flicking...I never could stand to watch commercials!

Unfortunately I married a man who likes to see all of a show, and can't stand it if he misses while I was off hunting a non commercial channel..which means for the few shows we watch I am always HUNGRY! food commercials may not make me go order out, but they sure do make me eat more...

Thru cub scouts my son gets a magazine that is nearly an ad every other page! I hate it, and am canceling the subscription, I don't care how good your articles are, with that many ads I never get to read the stuff! UGh.

I actually never was influenced to by anything that is advertised. What I do was when I see something that is new or just came out, I look at all the things I have already and use those. It works.

I used to look at them every sunday, but now being on a plan, I have no interest in them. More than having stuff, I want financial security. The more you want debtfreedom the easier saving gets.

I think you are onto something, Jodi, except I do read the local grocery store ad to make my list of stuff on sale...can we make an exception for that ad?

It definitely has been a temptation to read all the flyers that come in the mail! We discontinued the paper, but we get all kinds of other ads. I never thought to make it a conscious habit. I get some online from companies that I've done business with. I need to watch out for those, too. I'm on board with you.....

i do look at the Sunday paper ads, but for different reasons. Ours has the grocery ads in them, and I plan my menu around the sale items.

That and I buy the Sunday paper for the coupons. Reminder to self, go out and get paper today.

ETA if not for a sale ad at Target, I woudlnt have gotten Tide on sale for $4 (sale plus coupon). I don't really browse most of the other ads though. I don't need a flat screen tv for the game tonight for example.

Yes, I generally avoid reading about ads, which is why I like to record my shows so I can skip them all. Except today on Superbowl Sunday, where the best ads (supposedly) are all aired. Sometimes they're more entertaining than the halftime show lol
