  • New free music download service

No this is not spam and it's not promoting illegal downloading of music.

    Music Downloads from SpiralFrog.com

The site just went live today and allows users to download mp3s for free. It's ad-supported so the record companies get paid and are ok with it. I haven't seen that many ads and there aren't annoying popups either. I saw it on my local news and decided to check it out. Currently it's running really slow due to the massive amount of traffic, but it looks promising when the site gets quicker again.

If you check it out tonight, remember that it's really slow and the site still seems a bit buggy, but I've downloaded 4 mp3s so far and have high hopes for this.

I downloaded one track, and it's a wma (Windows Player) file with a DRM license, so you can't burn it on a disk. It also looks like they only give you free membership for one month, so when it expires you won't be able to play the files that you downloaded, unless you renew the membership.

Nope, it's free forever. You do have to renew it after a month, but it's a matter of typing in a 4 letter security code. They explain that they do this to keep people coming back to the site to increase their hit count and therefor more advertisement sponsors.
