  • Best place to sell used books?

We did a big cleanup of the office today, and have a laundry basket overflowing with used books we're ready to let go of.

What's the best way to make money off of them -- ebay, used book stores, or just taking the deduction from donating them to the library? Do used books sell very well on ebay? Is it worth the effort? Do most used bookstores give money or only store credit?

Amazon.com: Online Shopping for Electronics, Apparel, Computers, Books, DVDs & more and Half.com are both good places to sell books.

I buy alot of used books off of Amazon. I find Amazon much easier and quicker to use than wading through ebay.

I think it depends on the book.

I sent about 6 books to two different online companies that pay cash for books. Just do a google search for companies that do this.

I have a book waiting to sell on Amazon. If it doesn't sell it won't cost me a thing.

I also sold two books on ebay recently. Both had the option of buy it now, which the buyers used. It helps to research completed listings to see how much people generally are looking to pay for the book.

I have no experience with used book stores. Good luck to you.

To sell a lot of books at once, you might want to try a book-buyer like Blue Rectangle

They do not accept every book, by any means, but its easy to find out what they'll buy. There are a few of these buyers with similar online systems; just Google for them. I had a good experience selling to BlueRectangle in the past.

I've always sold my books on half.com with no problems.

I agree with honiechild, half.com works best for me (although I do use Amazon too sometimes)...

I use Paperback Swap instead of selling since I was nt able to get much for the books I like to read. Instead I post them and get a credit to "buy" a book from another member.

If you don't mind packing the books up and taking them to the post office when they sell, half.com is good (no listing fees and no commission until the books sell).

If you just want to get rid of them all at once and be done with it, check to see if there is a Half Price Books store in your area (they are all over the country); they pay cash.

half.com is great! Ebay and amazon are ok also. But at least with half.com there are no fees.

You mean there are no fees to list. There is certainly a fee (15% commission) with Half.com.

BTW - Amazon also does not charge a fee to list.

I am sorry! I should have been more specific about the fees. I guess with a commission like 15%...they may as well charge fees. I am so used to ebay that it seems like a relief not to pay fees until the item sells.

I did not know that Amazon did not charge to list. I looked into it once and thought I read something on listing fees. I guess not. I lookd into so many places after closing my ebay store so I guess it is all fuzzy. lol.

We made a lot of money selling on half.com, but that was many years ago. They must have raised their rates since them.

Half price books offers a reasonable amount of money, and you can always donate them for tax credit.

I received my check today for 3 books I sold to cashintobooks.com. I mailed them on May 3rd, so that is a pretty good turn around. The other site will pay me by paypal and even add in a 3% fee for chosing paypal!!

I have three books on amazon...but no takers yet.

I sold a book on Amazon a couple years ago and was pleased with the process.
