Any men on this forum cut their own hair?

Have any tips/tricks? I've done it before but the problem I encounter is making it fancy enough for my liking. I don't want my haircut to look like it was done myself.

Anyone have any awesome tips/tricks. There's surprisingly little out there as far as tutorials go. And please don't just tell me it's easy. It's not hard but I wouldn't say it's easy.

I've been cutting my own hair for years. Has saved me a ton of money. And it looks better than when I was paying to have it done professionally because I would only go every 5-6 weeks. Doing it myself, I cut it every 2 weeks, 3 at the most, so it stays looking neat and clean. I would never go back to paying for haircuts.

Yep, buzz cut by the wife on the deck pretty regularly.
My small town still has a barbershop where I can walk right in and get an $11 hair cut, so do that periodically too. Never have been to a salon where you have to make an appointment and pay $20 or more.

That would be a HUGE plus. I always procrastinate going to the barber so yeah, I go like 5-6 weeks and it's quite obvious I've gotten a haircut.

Yes! I've been cutting my own (full head of) hair for the past 20 years. It takes no more than 1 hour/month. It saves me about $250/year. (And that doesn't even include savings in transportation to and from barber shops.) I've been using the same $14 electric razor and scissors for many years. It even gives my arms exercise, believe it or not.

How does it look? Basically I look like every other guy. Nobody outside my family knows that I cut my own hair. I've been walking around for 20 years and nobody has ever questioned my hair, mentioned my hair, or even looked at my hair twice. Even when I've asked family members to check my work after I cut my own, they stare at me blankly, tell me my hair always looks the same, and can't seem to find any flaws unless they look really, really closely. When I've told people at work that I cut my own hair, nobody has ever believed me.

Cutting hair is NOT rocket science. If you can operate a scissors or an electric razor, you have the required qualifications. You can get fancy with mirrors, but if you want it even all over, you just set the electric razor to a particular length and then keep shearing until nothing more comes off. I actually like to do it with scissors. I do it almost entirely by feel - I can feel the remaining length of hair by pinching with my fingers.

Occasionally it looks little shabby to me if I'm scrutinizing it...but it grows in quickly...so within a week any shabbiness is gone. And I can always correct mistakes by cutting it again a little shorter. But that's not unique to cutting your own hair. I've had and seen plenty of lame, slightly-off-kilter haircuts from barbers before. All barbers are not created equal. Nor are they all perfect. Nor can they read your mind to know exactly what you want.

It's one of those things where you get better with practice. I recommend it. Eventually you will get exactly what you want, when you want it, and it costs you nothing.

My advice is to always do it slowly. Use an extra mirror for the back. Have a family member check your work. And if things go wrong, be ready to get out the electric razor and buzz it down.

I cut my own hair. #1 clipper, buzz it all around, call it a day. Takes about 15 minutes.

Prohijii, not a single one of your posts has been on the topic of the threads to which you have posted. I don't think any of them have been on the topic of saving or personal finance.

In case anyone would like to read something on topic in this thread, I will add that my son began cutting his own hair with electric clippers when he started college. If you like that kind of style anyway, I think you should try it because it does not take much skill at all.

I just cut mine this morning. I've alternated between periods of doing it myself, and going to a barber (when I find a really good one at a reasonable cost)... I do enjoy having another person cut my hair, and 2 of 3 places I've used barbers, they even wash my hair after the cut. Very enjoyable.

But home haircuts are cheap & easy. I basically do it by feel, and with a mirror or two, I can even do the back pretty well. As stated, if you make a mistake, you can either wait a week for it to grow out & cover up the mistake, or you just take it shorter. The cost-benefit of doing it yourself is pretty good---after just 3 or 4 times cutting your hair at home, you've already made up the cost of the clippers.

With the clippers, it's really impossible to make a mistake. You can't cut too short. I could cut my hair with my eyes closed and it would still come out perfectly.

Women do it too

I'm a woman and wear my hair very short.
I use clippers to cut the back, then a razor comb to cut the top and sides.
I do it more for the convenience than the savings.
And I've gotten more compliments on my hair since I started doing it myself.

I've been cutting my own hair since ~2001. I just do a buzz cut with the electric clippers and guard, and my other half helps with general QA and cleaning up the back side. I don't want to walk out of the house looking like a goof

The first time I did it, I had just graduated high school. My mom has a distaste for short hair, especially anything that resembles a military style haircut, so she told me in her own special way that she didn't like it (I think she said I looked like a Skinhead). I wasn't convinced, and I kept doing it anyway.

Dad saw what I was doing after a month or two, and I showed him that I was saving $20 every couple of weeks by not having to go to places like Supercuts, so one day when mom wasn't home, he asked me if he could borrow my clippers and if I'd show him how to use them. He's been cutting his own hair since 2001 as well

I've been cutting my own hair sense 1994, using clippers and a big hand held mirror to see the back my head in my bathroom mirror, once you have done it a few time, it's easy and it save a ton of money over the years.
