I tried the darning thing but I am not into it. I just wait for a sale and stock on white socks. I toss the old worn out socks or use as rags depend on what shape they are in!
i have hardwoods, so i'll walk around in old socks to 'dust mop'. sounds weird, i know, but nothing is better at cleaning the baseboards and getting into corners than toes, and you don't have to get on your hands and feet!
after a while, though, i too just toss 'em. takes me more time to work on mending them than it's worth to me.
I don't toss my socks untill they have holes in them. If the hole (usually on the hill) is still smal, I might wear it one more time, and then cut them in half, so when I get it out of the laundry, I know that they are just dust rugs.
i especially toss ladies trouser socks once they have a hole in them because the material they are made from is useless for cleaning. that, and i've had the blood circulation almost cut off from a toe b/c of the hold in one of my stupid socks! there's frugality, and then there's stupid (not to mention having to explain to a doctor why he has to amputate your toe because you didn't want to buy another $1 pair of socks...)

Excellent idea! I'll have to try that tomorrow when I do my cleaning!
