  • How far are you wiling to commute?

    Just curious.

I am getting older and just don't have the energy to travel and hour each way like I did when I was younger.

Currently I am looking for a job, after a 10 year hiatus.

I set my limit at a 30 min. commute, but some jobs have come up that are 35 min. or so and I won't rule those out.

Of course, I would LOVE a 15 min. drive or less, but I don't forsee that happening unless something comes up I am not currently aware of.

Thankfully I will be traveling during NON rush hour times, but I still hate the longer drives.

Just curious if you have a max you are willing to travel and what it might be.

We usually cap my husband's commute at 30 minutes as well. Fifteen minutes is much much nicer though!

      No kidding!

Now that my husband works from home three days per week, it has been great.

He still drives roughly 45 min. each way on the two days he does go in, but that is offset by his home days.

If you do want to enter the workforce again I would take a job that is outside of your 30 minute range if necessary. I would also keep searching for a job closer until something comes up. Its usually easier to find a job when you already have one.

If I take a job, I need to commit to a min. of a year.

I am having trouble because I can't FIND my old references. They have either retired or moved on.

I have references on paper, but they won't accept them. It has to be a confidential recommendation via email.

One district doesn't seem to care that they can't contact anyone I put down on the application, the closer in district does. They won't even talk to me until they receive references, 3 of them, from supervisors only.

It is ok, I just may have to travel a bit further. Not my first choice but may have to happen.

My limit is 1 hour, but I usually shoot for something in the 30-45 min. range. I would love to have a shorter commute. But, so long as I want to live where I do, there are very few employers less than 30 minutes away. I'm more tolerant of a longer commute when travel conditions are better. Sitting alone in multi-lane, slow-moving traffic is the worst. So, I'll take a longer commute if I can car pool, drive fun back roads, or use public transit/walk.

Good luck in your job search!

I've never had more than a 10 minute commute. I guess that's probably my limit.

I might be willing to consider a little more now that my kids are older. But when they were babies I was pretty set on being close to home. Plus, when you've managed a 10-minute commute for 25 years, I Don't know why you would consider anything more than that. We don't plan to move again until we are financially independent. So until then, we live where the jobs are.

Wow! That is super picky, although, maybe they have had issues in the past and need to be more strict. I suppose if you go with the other district, it is a foot in the door for a year to get those updated references.

My commute is 1 hour 10 min each way. I live in a remote area and accept the long commute as a trade off for privacy, quiet, acreage, and beautiful views. I work from home two out of five workdays so that certainly helps.

My commute is one hour each way door to door. 25 minutes on a commuter train, with the rest walking. No transfers. I'm luckier than most.

DH is 1 hour 20 minutes each way driving. Much worse. Good thing he does not have to go to the office 5 days a week.

I know a co-worker that commutes 2.5 hours each way. On buses with transfers (unpredictable traffic). Daily. She wants to live in a house with a yard.

My commute drive time is between 20-30 minutes depending on traffic weekdays. Not a fan of any traffic if I can help it.

1 hr 20 min or so...

I've been doing this for 16 years; with 15 years at the same work place. Last 3 years has been 4 days/week.

The route I take to get to work has been changing (traffic, construction dependent) so I've mixed it up over the years.

Oh gosh, I would never get anywhere. Public transportation isn't the best here. And I live literally 10 miles to the nearest bus stop and 13 miles to the nearest train. That would take 3 hours' walk each way first!
