I got this slickdeal email that this was the editor's top pick, a 79" tv for $3500, but free ship!

Unless you own a bar, who on earth even wants a tv that big? It's 19" taller than me! I don't need my tv to display in larger than life size. And the room would have to be huge, right?

i get guys and their toys. I do not get this particular slickdeal. My old BF would be all over this and I would dump the same in my Roth and see who was happier in 5 yrs! Well, that's too soon, check in at 10 yrs when he's made the final payment, maybe, lol.

TVs are measured diagonally, like from lower left corner to upper right corner, so you probably are taller than that TV. But a 79 incher is pretty big! It actually sounds humorously big to me. There will never be such a thing in this household. I don't know if we could get back far enough away from it for comfortable viewing. Our rooms are not so big.

I'm not a TV owner, but that actually looks like a pretty good deal for the size/type. Amazon is selling that same model for 4447+free shipping. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't spend 3500 on a TV personally. But then again I've spent more for specific audio home theater equipment.

Just depends on people's priorities and where they enjoy putting their money. For example, I know friends who have put over 6000 into their mountain bike (bicycle), bought a pure bred dog for 1100, 300 for a coffee maker, 6000 on a sewing machine.

While I would personally never pay any of those amounts for any of those objects, for the different people I just listed as examples, that was their hobby or passion. I can't really argue or care where they spend their money since i'm not them.

that's true, I shouldn't judge others wants, as I have plenty of my own. It just hit when I read 79 inches!

We would never do it because a) we don't have a room big enough and b) I'd never spend that much on a TV. But if you have the space and have the money, go for it.

I actually had the opposite problem when we bought our last TV (our first flat screen). We wanted one that fit in our existing wall unit which limited us to about 25-26 inches. I went to 5 stores. Each had loads of TVs but only 1 option in that size. So I picked the cheapest of the 5 and got it. I was expecting to have more choices.

there is a formula to figure out how large of a tv to buy based on the size of the room and how far you'll be sitting from it. It will also tell you how high up to mount it on the wall and at what angle to place it.

79" is overkill! We upgraded from a 55" Sony HDTV to a 60" LG Ultra HD around 3 months ago for $899, then turned around and sold the old TV for 250 on cragslist. 60" seems to be the current sweet spot for value IMO. Still haven't watched anything in UHD though . I remember the days when a 50" TV was considered massive, and you needed 3 guys to break their backs moving the damn thing.

We have a movie theater in our house. A projector is a much better deal. You can find very nice ones for $1k-ish for a much bigger screen. All you need is a wall. After time we upgraded to a screen. But the wall was fine for the first few years until we really committed to the movie theater thing.

& then people will ask us why we didn't just buy a giant TV? Because they are heavy and crazy expensive! & then it would be much smaller. Not so practical. But my parents have a giant TV and they enjoy it. Neither of us would go into debt over our toys (or over anything really).

There are a few different formulas for calculating maximum screen size based on viewing distance. Of course, those formulas come from the industry so they're always a little suspect.

The more conservative number I've seen would work out to a viewing distance of about 10.5 feet for a 79" screen. There is nowhere in our house where we would be that far from the TV. Plus that is a maximum and a lot of people wouldn't be comfortable with a screen that large even if the room measurements met that calculation.

I wouldn't want a TV that big, but I think my husband might. So, if we were planning an appropriate room for it and the price was right, I would go for it.

For the record, I don't see the free shipping as a significant part of the deal. $1500 off of $5000 is 30% off, which isn't a huge discount to me. That might be enough to make be buy something I'd been really, really wanting for a long time. But, it wouldn't be enough to make me buy something that I'd been saying would be nice to have for awhile.

Agreed. I paid under 1100 for my Optoma 6 years ago, which I currently use at 95" display. My friends all say it should be bigger to fill the wall, but sitting 14-15' away, its perfect for the distance/layout.

As for the argument of TV vs projector, I love movies and only watch shows on my desktop. While the TV displays look amazing for HD, I couldn't justify paying 2500-3K on a display I knew I would only use for movies/gaming. Maybe in a couple of years or when the bulb goes, I'll look at upgrading hardware depending on prices.

I have a 70" in the basement. Sit 14' away and it is just about right. Got it for $900 last year. Also have a 65" in the den and sit 15' away. It's plenty big as well. Paid $1100 for it 5 years ago.

To be fair too, we got the movie projector when HDTVs were brand new and were in the $10k range for smaller screens. The cost savings has shrunk over the years.

When we downsize to a smaller home, a mega TV might make more sense. (We have no plans to stay in current home once our kids are grown). We aren't really expecting to have the room for 100"+. But will still want as big a screen as possible.

so this 79" one is not really a great deal at $3500

I have 3 of the same exact tvs, Vizios from BJs, a weird size like they do at BJs, they are either 43 or 47", I forget. Have had them for years, I bought them over a period of a few years and I figured getting the same exact tv would be easiest for me setting them up. So now I'm spoiled, my mom will want to watch Netflix with me in her room and her tv is less than 30", I'm all, "how can you stand this, I can't see anything," but I only recently got rid of a 13" tv I got when 18 and used it my room until I bought bigger tvs. I can't even imagine watching tv on a 13" screen anymore, how did we ever do that? lol. First world problems, for sure

It's an OK deal because it's a 4k 3D TV. But a 70" 4k 3D Vizio is $1800 on Amazon, so twice as much for 9" is probably just silly. And 4k will be down to HD prices in a few years if they ever get enough content to drive the demand up. I've seen both and on a 70" TV it matters if you're inside the min distance. Outside, it's hard to tell.
